ASL Letters Guide

Build fundamentals before quizzing.

Handshape and Orientation

Accurate recognition depends on finger positions, palm orientation, and movement. Focus on silhouette first, then verify thumb placement and finger separation.

Common Confusion Pairs

  • M vs N: Thumb placement under three vs two fingers. Count the fingers above the thumb.
  • S vs A: S forms a fist with thumb over the front; A places the thumb along the side.
  • E vs O: E compresses the fingertips toward the palm; O forms a round shape.

Practice Drills

  1. Scan letters in random order for 60 seconds and say each aloud.
  2. Identify five confusion pairs daily and write a one-line cue for each.
  3. Switch to timed quizzes once accuracy exceeds 90% at Level 1.
