How to Read and Fingerspell Letters and Numbers
Fingerspelling in ASL is a foundational skill for spelling out names, places, or unfamiliar words. This guide will help you understand how to form each letter and number correctly.
Fingerspelling Letters (A–Z)
Each letter of the alphabet has a unique handshape in American Sign Language (ASL). Here's what you need to know:
How to Form the Letters:
- Form each letter using one hand (typically your dominant hand).
- Keep your hand steady and in a comfortable position at shoulder height.
- Move smoothly from one letter to the next when spelling full words.
- Practice by watching the ASL fingerspelling images and mimicking the handshape.
Uppercase vs. Lowercase?
There is no difference between uppercase and lowercase letters in ASL fingerspelling. A handshape for A is the same regardless of whether you're spelling "apple" or "Apple".
Fingerspelling Numbers (0–10)
Numbers 0 through 10 also have distinct handshapes. Be sure to:
- Face your palm outward for most numbers (exceptions: 1–5 use palm-in orientation in some regions).
- Pay attention to subtle finger position differences (e.g., 3 vs. 6).
- Practice clarity — numbers can be misread if rushed.
Using Your Dominant Hand
In ASL, consistency is more important than hand choice. Whether you're right- or left-handed:
- Use the same dominant hand consistently when fingerspelling or signing one-handed signs.
- In two-handed signs, your dominant hand usually takes the active role, while your non-dominant hand stays more stable.
- Deaf individuals will understand you even if you switch hands occasionally — but aim for consistency.
Tips for Beginners
- Keep your hand at shoulder height and clearly visible.
- Don’t rush — focus on accuracy first, speed later.
- Practice mirror drills: fingerspell while looking at yourself in a mirror to improve clarity and orientation.
- Use flashcards or image quizzes like Quick ASL Pro to test recognition and recall.
By mastering ASL fingerspelling, you're building the foundation to communicate names, places, and more with confidence!
